Correspondence from Harold C. Roberts to Faith N. Roberts 13 August, 1928

 My Sweetie,

                I’m so pleased and flattered, I don’t know what to do. I’ve been picked to go down the Coco River with the expedition from Ocotal.

                I had just completed the investigation that I had been making at Palacagüina, Totogalpa and here and had returned to Pueblo Nuevo and was just finishing the record of the investigation when a plane dropped orders for me to proceed immediately to Condega to there await air transportation to Ocotal for duty with the coco River patrol. There are about 40 men going and Capt Pete Geyer is the only other officer as far as I know.

                Naturally I am thrilled pink for I have been selected from the whole eleventh regiment by the Colonel. I am now waiting a plane here as I came over last night and Capt MacNulty (a peach) who is in command here and he and I celebrated last night a cool beer.

                As soon as I get to Ocotal I shall write you jmore fully of what it is all about and the details. Just at present, I know no more than what I have told you already.

                When I return to Pueblo Nuevo there was mail waiting for me and it did help so darling. you are just a peach and I love you so. The letters are now tied up in my roll of clothes down on the air field so I can’t answer them but shall after I get to Ocotal and then I can tell you more news. All the gang at Pueblo Nuevo as fine and all are envious as hell and can’t figure out why I am being sent, the only officer or man from the whole battalion. As a matter of fact, I don’t know myself why I was picked. I’m only sure that I’m tickled and flattered to death for it will be the greatest adventure we have had yet in Nicaragua for no white man has ever gone from Ocotal to the Atlantic coast at Cape Gracias-a-Dios. It will be hardship I know but will be great sport and if we do go all the way through, (they may stop us or not permit us to go down there) we will certainly have a record behind us.
