"26 Sept. 1928
Camp on Coco River
My Darling:
They have decided to recall us! The river is so high and dangerous and they have came to the conclusion that the actual military value will not be commensurate with the possible cost. So I understand there will be a patrol out for us with Pack-bulls to bring in our equipment. We are disappointed in a way but the river looks hellish from here on and it may mean the loss of more lives. Then too we have 30% of the men sick with malaria, dysentery, grippe. So I believe it’s a wise move but would never admit it. I feel fine with the exception that I must have brushed against some poison plant or other for I broke out with a terrible itching rash in my head, hair, face arms + body to my waist. It is going away now and I am scaling like a snake shedding it’s skin. It looks funny now but was by no means fun when it was itching as though a million ants were biting all over me. Other than that, I feel fine.
Have received no mail lately. I wish we had. That is what keeps us going down here. But here it is almost all of sept. over and soon we should have the dope on what we are to do.
Hope you received the information. Was talking to Dr. Oneil [rest of letter removed]."
